Kim and Jack's Band — Chapter 6 — The Drum Kit
After that day, Jack disappeared. He came back with an idea.
We don't have a band. Kim insists on making that clear.
After that day, Jack disappeared.
Three weeks without a word. That never happened — we saw each other almost every day. I didn't even really know where he lived to go after him. We'd been friends for years and I didn't know his address. That's how it works when nobody has a house you can call a house.
I was worried. Not that I'd admit that to anyone.
Then, in the middle of the night, little pebbles started hitting my window.
I got up. It was Jack, down below, all filthy, with a huge grin.
— I did it, damn it. Open the fucking garage.
— What the hell is this, Jack? — I was still half asleep. — What time is it?
— Open the garage.
He had a drum kit. Old, missing one of the toms, snare torn, all patched up.
— We're not putting that piece of junk in my garage.
— We're putting that piece of junk in your garage, yes we are.
— Explain to me first what's going on.
He hadn't been able to borrow a kit anywhere. So he worked. Three weeks of hell, nonstop, saving up cash to buy that wrecked kit.
— We finally have a band.
— Jack. You're losing it. Helena's going to hear you.
