The Chains — Chapter 4 — The Door

The doorman, Helena's debt, and the warning nobody took seriously.

Kim doesn't like telling stories. So Jack tells it with him.

Jack looked at the club. Then he looked at me.

— Alright then. I'm with you. Come what may.

I knew I could count on him. Always did. It's a bond that doesn't need explaining.

We went up to the door.

The club was usually open. The crew drank outside, showed off with the bikes, made noise all night.

Not that night. Door shut. Nobody on the sidewalk.

There was a guy at the door. Big.

— Nah, bro. No minors. Shit's heavy in here. Come back when you're out of diapers.

— Cool, brother. I just want to talk to the woman with the purple hair.

— And why do you wanna talk to her?

— None of your business. What is your business is that you're gonna bring her out here.

He didn't move.

— Tonight we're closed for a private event. Come back another day. Relax, I'll tell the purple-haired lady you stopped by.

— No, brother. You didn't get it.

I said it serious. Real serious.

— Here's the deal. Either you go in right now and bring the woman with the purple hair out here, or I go in. And when I'm done, the only person standing in there is gonna be me.

He laughed.

Jack looked at me. He knew I wasn't kidding.

JACK

That's when I stepped in. Somebody had to try diplomacy.
