The Chains — Chapter 7 — Through a Straw
Jack breaks the first one, Kim takes the gun from the second. Then they split up: one goes up, the other goes down.
Kim doesn't like telling stories. So Jack tells it with him.
Jack talked to me while I still had my back turned. Slow. Cold.
— Any problem if I give this dude one more? I don't think just the arm's gonna be enough.
— Do whatever you want. Let's leave as many of them as we can eating through a straw.
— Straw shoved straight up their ass — he finished.
Jack looked at the guy.
Calm. The guy was screaming, cussing and looking at his own limp arm, not believing it.
— You heard my boy. Don't take it personal.
And he put the pipe in his mouth.
Whack.
On the first one the guy went down. Jack kept hitting, steady, same rhythm, looking at the others while he hit.
Blood running. Teeth flying.
The others were frozen. Watching the two of us. Not getting it.
That's when it really started.
— There's guns in here — I said. — Watch out.
— I saw — Jack answered.
A guy in the back of the bar, hand on his waistband.
Jack ran straight at him. Went past three on the way without stopping.
He grabbed the gun by the barrel and turned it toward its owner's face. When you force the barrel against whoever's holding it, the wrist twists, and a twisted hand can't hold anything. The guy let go of the gun.
Then came Jack's pipe.
