The Chains — Chapter 12 — The Panther

Helena in the corner of the hall, powder in the fans, money on fire — and Kim on all fours.

Kim doesn't like telling stories. So Jack tells it with him.

KIM

When I went in, I just looked around.

Searching. I didn't care about anything else. Just stayed sharp about the guns.

And then I found her.

In a corner. Looked like she was out. Drugged.

The woman with the purple hair.

Helena.

And, once again, something inside me broke.

I don't know why. But I felt an enormous happiness. A joy that didn't fit inside me, at having found Helena in the middle of all those guys.

There were a lot of people to break. A lot of people to take down.

But, at first, there was only one target.

JACK

As soon as we went in, I knew shit was about to go down. Because I saw Helena too.

She looked like she'd taken something. Her clothes were messed up. If they hadn't done anything yet, they were going to. It was written all over what was about to happen there.

There wasn't time.

On all fours, Kim charges twice as fast. He went past everybody and straight at the guy who looked like the big boss.

The guy opened his mouth. Couldn't tell if he was going to ask "who are you" or "what the fuck is this".

Kim jumped on him. The guy was bigger, so he wrapped him up mid-leap, pinning both of the guy's arms.

And started headbutting.

One. Another. Another. And laughing.

The smile opened, the blood ran, and the guy went down to his knees, eating headbutts.

It looked like Kim wanted to do something else to him.

But the others started arming up. You could hear the safeties coming off.

Obviously the shooting started.
