The Chains — Chapter 14 — One More

The firefighters, the police, the hospital. And the chain still left.

Kim doesn't like telling stories. So Jack tells it with him.

After Jack went out, I only have flashes.

I remember screams. A lot of screams.

And I remember that, for some reason, I wasn't in a hurry.

So, whatever I did, I did it slowly. Calm. Easy.

From the firefighters on, I remember more clearly.

When they got there, I'd already gotten Jack and Helena out. Both of them in my arms, one at a time.

And I let that warehouse burn.

I sat on the curb, waiting.

I asked the firefighters to take care of Jack and Helena.

They wanted to take care of me too. I was covered in blood, and a good part of it wasn't mine. But I didn't care about myself.

I just wanted the two of them to be okay.

Then the police showed up.

They asked a ton of questions. I said I didn't know. That I didn't know what had happened.

It wasn't entirely a lie.

A day or two later, Jack and Helena were in the hospital.

Jack had already woken up. He got questioned too. He also said he didn't remember anything. That he didn't know what had happened, or why there were so many guys on the floor, or who had done it.
